Demolition of Historic Winterstoke Road Bridge: A £11m Project Unveiled (2026)

A historic bridge's fate is sealed as it prepares to meet its end, but its story is far from over. This iconic structure, a silent witness to a town's war efforts, will soon be demolished, but its legacy will live on.

The Winterstoke Road Bridge in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, has stood tall since 1941, serving as a vital link to the RAF's aeroplane production factory in Oldmixon. However, due to its age, the bridge's condition has deteriorated, and it is now facing its final chapter.

But here's where it gets controversial... The North Somerset Council has decided to replace this historic bridge with an £11 million project, citing safety concerns and the need for an upgrade. The new bridge, set to open in 2027, will span the Bristol-Taunton mainline railway and provide improved access for pedestrians, cyclists, and heavier vehicles.

The old bridge will be demolished on Christmas Day, a symbolic end to its service, coinciding with seasonal railway closures. Councillor Mike Bell, the council leader, described the bridge as a "mainstay" for the community, facilitating around 20,000 journeys daily.

"It is a crucial route, and we must ensure its longevity," Bell added.

And this is the part most people miss... The new bridge aims to last for the next 120 years, a testament to the council's commitment to infrastructure development. The project, led by Octavius Infrastructure and the council, is primarily funded by the Ministry of Defence, highlighting the significance of this transport link.

Councillor John Crockford-Hawley, the authority's heritage champion, emphasized the bridge's role in preserving the town's wartime history. Oldmixon's aeroplane production during World War Two is an essential chapter in the region's narrative, and the bridge's replacement will ensure this story continues to be told.

So, while the Winterstoke Road Bridge may be demolished, its memory and the stories it holds will endure.

What do you think about the bridge's replacement? Is it a necessary upgrade, or should we strive to preserve our historic structures? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
